Christmas 2020: Fun Ideas to Keep the Christmas Spirit During the Lockdown

Here's how to find joy this holiday season -- even if the COVID-19 pandemic changes the tradition.

Like everything else, the holiday season has been impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Christmas season, specially to many of us Filipinos, is the most wonderful time of the year. We are known for celebrating the holiday season longer than other countries, thus having more traditions than the usual. From having Noche Buena with the whole family, attending Simbang Gabi for 9 days, to going from house to house for Christmas Carols and many more. The season kept families close together. But this year, it all changed when the pandemic hit. Mass gathering is prohibited, and social distancing is implemented. This may mean that our traditional Christmas won't look exactly the same as it usually does, but we can get creative and find new ways to celebrate. Some of the new ideas may turn out so good that you'll decide to make new Christmas traditions along the way.

1. Call your loved ones

Zoom and Google Meet became the norm for this pandemic season. So go ahead and try to held that Christmas party-- virtually! You can enjoy having Noche Buena with your friends and family on the call. Who says one can't have a good laugh with someone even just on screen?

2. Send gifts, even better if it's handmade

Gift giving is always such a fun part of the season. And you can still send love and remind someone that you remember them by sending them something to put under their Christmas tree. If you make them promise to wait until the 25th to open, you can plan a video call for gift opening and see their reactions. Holiday cards are nice too!

3. Watch Christmas classics together

Since wandering outside is not advisable, watching classic family movies is such a good idea to spend the Christmas morning with your family. Sit on the couch with your siblings and have bonding with everyone. Being together with your loved ones is one of the essence this Christmas season.

4. Send Cookies to your far away family and friends

No matter how close or far your loved ones are this year, you can spread some holiday cheer by mailing holiday cookies to them. After all, everyone loves receiving surprise packages, especially when they're filled with homemade treats.

5. Decorate your home with lovely light displays

Filipino Christmas wouldn't be complete without our known Parol. Transform your home into a festive wonderland using a variety of Christmas decorations. Start putting up that Christmas tree filled with love. This activity will surely get you into the holiday spirit and remind you that Christmas is just around the corner.
